The pictures are incredible. The fact that no one was killed or injured when an entire intersection and three-story textile factory were swallowed up is even more mind-boggling. Guatemala's "piping feature" (apparently this is not a sinkhole afterall), was a result of the fact that the city of over 3 million is essentially built on very porous volcanic pumice stone. This comes on the heels of Tropical Storm Agatha and a deadly eruption of the Pacaya volcano, quite a difficult week for Guatemaltecos. Over 166 have died and Quirigua, a Maya World Heritage Site was severely damaged.
